Will JNU get a Dalit President after 27 years?

On 20th March, Jawaharlal Nehru University will be witnessing its much popular presidential debate in the campus. Today, the students will get to know about the agendas and outlooks of different organisation. This time, election is special from two perspectives. First, after pandemic and nearly Four years Campus is witnessing the elections. Second, this time Left has declared a Dalit Presidential Candidate, Dhananjay.

Last time, also Left Alliance had sweeping victory, this time even it is expected that left alliance will win over right-wing ABVP.

Who is Dhananjay?

Dhananjay is a PhD Scholar in JNU and he is associated with AISA from his Bachelors days in Delhi University. He is a son of retired police person from Bihar. Dhananjay feels that being a born in Dalit family he has faced caste discrimination in his locality also in educational institutions. Dhananjay was actively involved in “Roll Back FYUP” programme, because four year graduation progams cost higher for education which become unaffordable for marginalised section of the society. According to Dhananjay “The concept of social justice is not accepted in our society. Our merit is always questioned and so are our academic record and interests.”

With the social justice outlook, we need to wait and watch that will the students of JNU will elect a Dalit President?
