Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday, August 5, amid massive violent protests. Sources report that she has left for India and is heading to New Delhi, with plans to move to London next. A senior official from the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Office, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed to ANI that Sheikh Hasina vacated her official residence in Dhaka due to escalating violence. The official stated, “Her current whereabouts are unknown. The situation in Dhaka is highly sensitive, and the Prime Minister’s residence is under siege by a mob.”
Sheikh Hasina submitted her resignation to President Shahabuddin Ahmed at noon. Following her departure, millions in Dhaka began a victory march, and Dhaka airport has been sealed to prevent any ministers from leaving the country.
Local media reported that at around 2:30 pm on Monday, Sheikh Hasina, along with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, left Bangabhaban by military helicopter for a “safer place.”
