The once-bustling hostels at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have become nearly deserted following the tragic events of August 9, when a junior doctor was found murdered in the institution’s seminar room. A fourth-year MBBS student, who is among the 17 women still remaining in the hostel, shared that the dormitories used to accommodate 160 junior women doctors across various courses before the incident.

The exodus began immediately after the discovery of the doctor’s body, with students starting to leave the campus in droves. While some returned briefly, the situation worsened after an attack on the hospital by miscreants on the night of August 14, leading to even more students, particularly women, vacating the premises. The student emphasized that, apart from the nursing hostel, most of the other hostels on campus are now empty.

The RG Kar hospital campus contains five hostels designated for women doctors and students, but their occupancy has dramatically dwindled in the wake of these disturbing events.
