Huge Loss to Left Politics: Sitaram Yechury No More!

One of the greatest leaders of left politics Sitaram Yechury (CPIM) dies on 12 September at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi due to respiratory infection. The country mourns on his death as he was leader who was highly adored by people for his grounded politics.

Sitaram was an alumni of Delhi University St. Stephen’s College, where he studied Economics, after that he joined Jawaharlal Nehru University and completed his masters in Economics. He could not complete his PhD because he was in jail during emergency. Sitaram known for his courageous student politics, during his JNUSU presidency he walked to the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi residence for her resignation and Indira Gandhi came herself to meet him.

He was Member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha between 2005-2017 after that he was appointed General Secretary of CPI(M) and till his death he was remain at his post. Yechury was known to give a new direction to left politics in which he tried to convince left leaders to give their support to secular government (UPA) government. He also asked left parties to unite against the current NDA government and fight election along with INDIA alliance. He was respected across the party lines. His death is a huge setback to left politics.

His family has donated his body to AIIMS for medical studies.
