Jaipal Singh Munda (1903–1970) was a prominent Indian tribal leader, politician, and sportsman who played a significant role in the socio-political empowerment of Adivasis (tribal communities) in India. Born in Bihar, Munda belonged to the Munda tribal community. He was not only a skilled hockey player but also an influential political figure.
Jaipal Singh Munda made a mark in the world of sports by captaining the Indian hockey team that won the gold medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. However, his contributions extended beyond sports. Munda actively advocated for the rights and welfare of tribal communities, striving to address their social and economic challenges.
In the political arena, Jaipal Singh Munda played a pivotal role in the Constituent Assembly of India. He was instrumental in articulating the concerns and aspirations of Adivasis during the drafting of the Indian Constitution. Munda emphasized the need for special provisions to protect the rights and interests of tribal communities, ultimately leading to the inclusion of Article 244(1) in the Constitution, which allowed for the creation of autonomous tribal regions.
