
Uttarakhand, which is currently ruled by BJP became the first state in the country to implement Uniform Civil Code. The Uttarakhand’ UCC has many provisions which applies to uniformly to every communities of the state. It had abolished coparcenary property rights and now every property will be treated as self-acquired property. According to UCC, the child born during a live-in relationship or without wedlock will be treated as legitimate child. The UCC comes with a unique provision about live in relationship in which if a couple enters into a live in relationship they had to register within a month and they had to also inform when they are terminating their relationship. However, the bill has been heavily criticised by opposition, social activists and many have alleged that the UCC is infringing their right to privacy also the UCC applies to heterosexual couple, it had side lined the LGBTQIA community.
