In a groundbreaking ruling, the Supreme Court declared the electoral bonds scheme unconstitutional on Thursday. The unanimous verdict was delivered by a five-judge Constitution bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. The decision came in response to a series of pleas challenging the legal validity of the central government’s electoral bond scheme, which permitted anonymous contributions to political parties.

The Chief Justice stated that the anonymous electoral bonds scheme violates the right to information as enshrined in Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. The bench, which had reserved its verdict on November 2 of the previous year, reached this significant conclusion.
