In a significant effort to address the educational challenges faced by transgender individuals, the state government has allocated an additional Rs 2 crore to the Tamil Nadu Transgender Welfare Board.
During the budget presentation, Minister Thangam Thenarasu underscored the need to address the limited higher education opportunities for transpersons despite the implementation of various schemes. He stated, “To cover all their educational expenses, including tuition and hostel fees, we have decided to allocate Rs 2 crore more to the transgender welfare board.”
Finance Secretary T Udhayachandran, addressing reporters at the secretariat, explained that discussions were initiated with Chief Minister MK Stalin after reports highlighted high dropout rates among transgender students. As a result, the government resolved to wholeheartedly support transpersons pursuing higher education.
Tamil Nadu Transgender Welfare Board member M Radha commended the decision, stating, “This is a commendable step in the right direction. It has the potential to improve the socio-economic status of transpersons and enhance their employability. However, it is also crucial that the government create job opportunities for educated transpersons with reasonable salaries.” This initiative is seen as a positive move towards promoting inclusivity and supporting the educational aspirations of the transgender community.
