The Indian state of Assam, characterized by a substantial Muslim population, has annulled a long-standing British-era law governing Muslim marriage and divorce. This move has sparked resentment within the minority community, with their leaders asserting that the decision aims to create divisions among voters based on religious lines in anticipation of the upcoming national election.

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on X day that the state has revoked the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, which was put into effect nearly nine decades ago.
