Right to Alimony for Muslim Women

Divorce and rights of Muslim Women are always part of discussion. Amid various discussion of divorce, Supreme Court comes with a ruling in which the court had dismissed an appeal by a Muslim man regarding maintenance of the wife after the divorce.

The Supreme Court said that under section 125 of code of criminal procedure 1973 (CrPc), ex wife has right to seek maintenance even after divorce. According to apex court, Section 125 of CrPc is a secular law and it applies to every women despite of her religious background.

Legal experts and women right activists had applauded the rulings of Supreme Court and said its a positive step towards women rights. As many women left abandoned after divorce and men do not take responsibilities of them and their child. This step will provide socio-economic support to Muslim women.
