Hema Committee Report: #MeToo in Malayalam Film Industry

On 19th August, Hema Committee Report released, after that there has been sensation in Malayalam film industry, because the report raises serious concern over safety of women in Malayalam film industry.

The Committee was formed in 2017, after a brutal incident happen with an actress in which she was assaulted and filmed in a moving car. This incident made big headlines and forced Kerala government to formulate a committee which will investigate crimes against women in Malayalam industry.

After huge investigation, and testimonies by the people, the 296 page report was submitted by the committee in 2019. But the report was not in public domain for five years. After, condemnation and pressure by the people the report made public which revealed shocking details about Malayalam film industry, where women are exploited on all levels. They are often asked for sexual favours by their producers, lead actors, directors. For any punishment they are asked to repeat intimate scene with lead actors. There is significant pay gap between male and female actors, male actors are paid way higher than female actors.

The report is showing its impact, the famous actor Siddique has resigned from the post of General-Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), similarly filmmaker Ranjith also stepped down from the Chairman of Kerala Chalchitra Academy and now Mohanlal resigned from the post of AMMA president.

After this report, so many women from different film industry came out and expressed her suffering regarding their harassment as women and social media had again witnessed a #MeToo movement.
