On Monday, the chairperson of the National Commission for Women revealed that she had received 18 complaints from women in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, including two cases of rape, during her visit to the area. Chairperson Rekha Sharma called for President’s Rule in the region and the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, citing her alleged failure to prevent atrocities against women. Concurrently, the state police arrested a television journalist covering the events in the area, leading to a strong reaction from the BJP.

“Women in Sandeshkhali have faced harassment and the denial of their rights. A significant number of them have experienced molestation, with 18 complaints raised, including two cases of rape. Recently, the police addressed one of these rape complaints. Women expressed their reluctance to speak out, citing fear of police pressure and societal stigma. They also mentioned sending young girls away to protect them from such incidents,” asserted Chairperson Sharma.
